Winter Trail Running
The trail runner's winter ascent experience. Victoria’s highest Alpine peaks have just been opened up for guided ‘fast and light’ ascents… in the snow!
Accomplished international extreme sky runner and qualified Snow and Ice Guide Matt Cooper, having made numerous winter ascents ‘fast and light’ style on many of Australia’s, New Zealand's and Europe's mountains is offering a limited number of guided ascents of Mt Bogong.
The first of its kind in the Australian Alps, these single day trips are aimed at those trail runners, mountain runners or adventure enthusiasts who want to experience a true alpine style ascent of our biggest white mountains in winter. No previous experience is assumed, this challenge is for those who are looking to learn and try something new.
Our skilled guides are confident in moving in the alpine environment and will keep you safe. We'll give tuition on techniques for ‘fast and light’ movement in the mountains over snow and ice, correct fall arrest and use of specific ice tools like crampons and ice axes. All technical equipment is provided including lightweight crampons, ice axes, harnesses and ropes. You'll get a guided ascent to the summit, plus information on preparation and planning for your own future winter ascents (including gear choice, weather and snowpack).
This trip is for well-conditioned runners. This IS NOT a long day bush walk in the snow. As a guide, if you're running a few times a week with a weekly total of 20 kilometers or more including some hills you'll be fine. Don't forget Mt Bogong is a very big hill so go get some vertical done!
